In order to get the bid for the sports hall under way, we need to show that members of the community will use it. More details will appear on the site soon. In the meantime add your comments below!

I would welcome the idea of a village sports hall in Banwell.
Also, with the growing number of squash players in & around Banwell, a
squash court (a national school sport) would also be an added
attraction.
Another advantage of a squash court is the fact that it can also be
'multi purpose' e.g. table tennis, aerobics, judo, even as a small board
room / meeting room (the front wall being perfect for projections etc.)

I firmly belive that the school could use a new sports hall, the fact that they have to use the one small hall with the leaky ceiling for assemblies, dinners, sports, performances et al has always been disgraceful. However, we already have two halls, the village hall and the YCH which are supposed to be dedicated for community use. The village hall is marked out for badminton. Will it be possible for them to argue that the villagers in Banwell are crying out for another sports hall. I had always imagined a sports hall being built on the land owned by the school which was sold for housing. I am sorry if I sound a little jaundiced, a result of living in Banwell for so many years I'm afraid.

Yes, I know it's difficult to maintain enthusiasm after years of living with broken promises but I would urge you to try. We have a new Parish Council who really are trying to improve things in the village and there are many talented and energetic newcomers who might just make a difference!
As for the proliferation of community halls in the village - I think everyone feels that this needs to be sorted out...perhaps with a radical shake up. Please come along to a PC meeting and put your views. Or air them on this site first (and I'll take them along to the PC!). Change is in the air: I hope you like it!

to clarify the situation, For the bid to be successful the school needs to show that it will use the new sports hall about 80% of the time and that the community will use the hall about 20% of the time. The sports hall will also have a meeting room, kitchen and changing rooms.

Much of the community use will be with the children outside of school hours. e.g. fundraising events, Birthday parties, out of school clubs, meetings. However the hall will also be available for any member of the community for sports activities, functions, meetings, etc.

Rental income will go straight into school funds so the hall will also be a further income stream to the school in addition to the fundraising efforts of the Friends of The school. Due to this I suspect that hire rates will be very reasonable! :)

There will be secure seperate access to the site.

The principle of securing the funding as such is not that the village is desperate for the facility but that there is enough interest in use by other bodies than the school itself.

Please also bear in mind that the YCC is likely to be split up to accomodate the play group.

I hope this clarifies the situation.
