GOSW say no to weight restriction! « Thread Started on Sept 2, 2003, 11:15am »
You may or may not be aware that BREATHE and TMTV have been talking to North Somerset Council (NSC) about whether it would be possible to implement some kind of weight restriction on the A368/371, possibly as part of a larger scheme to discourage shortcutting HGVs that have no business here to take another, more suitable route.
In general the proposals have been well received by the officials and by our District Councillors alike. In fact, NSC was sufficiently keen on the idea to take it up with the Government Office of the South West, who are responsible for coordinating transport policy throughout the south west. After a three-month delay (apparently due to staff shortages) GOSW has recently responded to NSC's suggestion with a very firm 'thumbs down'.
The main reason they give for this rejection is that, "...the A368 is designated as the most appropriate route for traffic travelling between Bath/south Bristol and Weston-super-Mare. The 'shortcutting' HGVS referred to in the TMTV report are in fact using a route which is currently deeded to be the most appropriate."
This is plainly daft.
It is possible that the officials who are offering this excuse have never been to Banwell or have not been delayed long enough to understand the nature of the problem they have created. We need to point out the error of their ways

I reply to the posting, i think thatone reason lorries tend to come through Banwell, is that the A38 has become so stupid with all the restrictions to the speed limit and the camera, that it has became a nightmare to use, i have stopped using it in my car, i have spoken to HGV drivers, and that is one reason, althought they dont want to go that fast, there is no reason to have the limits set that slow, it is only making the traffic situaton worse, as it would do in Banwell with humps, I did not think that it was legal to ban vehicles, unless there is a proper designated alternative route, there is not one, and Banwell to bath is an "A" road, where else can they go, on a byepass perhaps!!! as we all know that Banwell is totally unsuitable for HGVS, but i have yet to see any alternative ways for them to go, and lastly as an ex HGV driver myself we never came through Banwell unless we had to, all the best to all mole?

Cotter says he wants traffic diverted! « Reply #2 on Sept 7, 2003, 2:56pm »
With some despair I read in the Mercury this week that our MP, Mr Cotter, feels that traffic should be diverted via the motorway! and that a bypass would be environmentally unfriendly! Perhaps he could tell our friends at GOSW that he doesnt mind Banwell being a part of the primary route network, because he is planning to build us a motorway around Banwell anyway
listed buildings dont count! « Reply #3 on Sept 8, 2003, 5:15pm »
Question was:
We met a while ago at our property ** West St. Banwell. I did email a >person at the council and ask them this question and they said they passed >it on but I have not had a response yet so I thought i would try again. >As our house is listed is there anything about the road being so close to >the property, or anthing about what vehicles can use the road. We have 10+ >wheelers hgv's thundering passed our house at 3foot away. Could you confirm >whether there is anything in the listings that would say this was >unacceptable. >Also have you got any documentation you could send me regarding our house >being listed please. >Also are you the person who deals with conservation areas? >As this is and the amount of traffic and the size of traffic im sure this is >not acceptable. If you could give me the email address of the person I >should be emailing.

I sympathize with you over the vehicles going through Banwell but there is >no power under the listed building legislation to stop this. I will try and >find someone in highways section of the directorate for you to talk to about >weight limits etc. > >Generally conservation area issues are handled by my collegues in > Development Control. However the fact that your house is listed takes >precedence over the conservation area. > >Copy of list entry in the post.

As an ex HGV driver working from shepton mallet at the time.. Yes a restriction would be a pain in the arse to get to weston.. BUT these people must live with it. The traffic problem in banwell is a joke. Go for it you guys. You have the support of us. Us now being the Taxis in Weston. Good luck guys

in other places tens of house have ben knocked down to allow for a wider road, in banwell they would only have to knock down a few, lets knock them down have a nice big road! then the listed buildings, and the others that are falling down anyway, would not be a problem!! how's that?

personally if i was thinking of taking an HGV through Banwell, i would look at the alternative of travelling from Church Hill down the A38 to the roundabout near Brent Knoll and back up the A370 to Weston-super-Mare, not only would this be an easier drive (and probably on the whole quicker) but also more respectful to the local residents of Banwell.
I feel those in authory to enforce a weight restriction to encourge such a route with signing for the A368, A38 and A371 to assist commercial drivers to the more appropriate route.
I appreciate that this is not a comprehensive solution, but would be a simple way of quickly relieving the route some of the larger vehicles and hence reducing the grid lock.
I also understand that the bureaucry of this country may mean that implimenting weight restrictions could be an arduous process, but may be some simple signs displaying a lorry and WSM encouraging HGV's allong the A38 and A370 route could be a more realistic start.
I am sure that this avenue has probably been explored, but thought i would mention Brussles as the UK seems to spending alot of money reinforcing bridges at the moment for the larger european weight levels for commecial vehicles, and i wondered if there was anything in european law that may help your guys plight, not necessarily in width, but it could be that the 44 tonnes (i think) that a trunk road is suppose to be able to take will be too much for your main street or may put at risk the foundations of the listed buildings that ajoin the main route through Banwell and may require a preservation order against such heavy vehicles.
